Senior Developer (Freelance)
Instrument is a digitally native design and technology company built to help brands unlock their full potential. Since 2005, our team of makers, thinkers, and storytellers has partnered with leading brands like Google, Nike, Uber, ŌURA, and Eventbrite to craft digital experiences that create impact and drive results.
Unlike traditional agencies, we don’t just design—we build. Our work lives at the intersection of taste and technology, powered by curiosity, thoughtful curation, and a commitment to delivering the most fitting solution for every brief. We bring this to life across three core offerings: Brand, Marketing, and Product.
As a member of our freelance network, you’ll collaborate with our teams to bring bold ideas to life—whether launching new brands, building digital products, or shaping experiences that move people. We welcome collaborators from all backgrounds and experiences who share our curiosity, creativity, and care for craft.
We believe great work comes from diverse perspectives and shared purpose. If you’re passionate about learning, experimenting, and making work that matters, we’d love to hear from you.
The Role
We’re looking for a Senior Developer to join an established client engagement and help strengthen and evolve an existing digital application. This is an extension of a long-standing partnership, and you’ll step into a team and sprint process that are already up and running.
The focus of this engagement will be working through technical debt within the application: independently identifying and resolving issues, improving the health and accessibility of the experience, and helping the team maintain steady delivery. We’re looking for a product-minded Frontend or Full Stack Developer with strong Next.js and Tailwind CSS experience who can get oriented quickly, troubleshoot effectively, and move work forward with minimal oversight.
Contract: September 14 – October 30
Commitment: Approximately 20 hours/week
What You'll Do
- Work through prioritized technical debt within an established web application.
- Investigate, troubleshoot, and resolve issues independently, escalating or collaborating when needed.
- Address accessibility issues and help improve the overall quality and maintainability of the experience.
- Work within an established sprint cadence, taking ownership of assigned work from definition through completion.
- Partner closely with backend engineering, QA, and Production to align on priorities, dependencies, and delivery.
- Contribute clean, well-scoped pull requests with clear documentation and respond thoughtfully to review feedback.
- Proactively surface technical risks, blockers, or dependencies that could impact delivery.
What You'll Bring
- Senior-level experience as a Frontend or Full Stack Developer building and maintaining production digital experiences.
- Experience building modern web applications with Next.js, TailwindCSS and Typscript
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work independently and make sound technical decisions.
- Experience working within established codebases and addressing technical debt.
- Experience identifying and resolving web accessibility issues.
- Strong development practices, including clean PR etiquette, sensible scoping, and responsiveness to code review.
- Comfort working within an established Agile or sprint-based development process.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills across engineering, QA, and Production.
- The ability to get up to speed quickly and make meaningful progress without significant hand-holding.
